Mission

The mission of the Cohoes City School District, a partnership of schools, parents and the community, is to prepare its students for success in tomorrow’s world.

 

Vision

The Cohoes City School District strives to be one of the highest achieving school districts in the greater Capital Region.

 

Goals/Commitments

  • All students will be immersed in rigorous coursework and engaged in learning that promotes curiosity, creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, communication, citizenship and compassion for others.

  • All students will be supported to meet high expectations and graduate college and career ready.

  • All teachers will have the knowledge and skills to expertly deliver instruction and meet the unique needs of all learners.

  • The district will maximize the efficiency of its resources to effectively and innovatively meet the goals and objectives of programs and services.

2017-18 Priorities

We believe in future-ready knowledge and skills

All students will be immersed in rigorous coursework and engaged in learning that promotes curiosity, creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, communication, citizenship and compassion for others.

  • Technology in our classrooms:

    • Distribute Chromebooks to teachers and students

    • Embed digital literacy and citizenship skills into the K-12 curriculum

    • Hold second annual Cohoes Tech Summit

  • Promoting the seven Cs:

    • Strengthen the integration of the seven Cs into lesson and unit planning

    • Continue to revise curriculum maps in all content areas to align with New York State Learning Standards

    • Expand Project-based Learning in Math and Science

We believe in a culture of high expectations

All students will be immersed in rigorous coursework and engaged in learning that promotes curiosity, creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, communication, citizenship and compassion for others.

  • Attendance:

    • Reduce chronic absenteeism through Every Minute Matters

  • College and Career Readiness:

    • Improve student achievement in all content areas

    • Promote work-based learning through internships and job shadowing

    • Form secondary school counseling committee to strengthen college and career grade-level expectations

    • Expand dual credit offerings according to future-ready pathways

  • Supporting our Students:

    • Promote lifelong wellness through health and fitness initiatives

    • Strengthen student mentoring

    • Address students’ mental health and wellness through enhanced systems of support

    • Ensure consistent implementation of district-wide plan for supporting students with significant behavioral needs

We believe in learning by all

All teachers will have the knowledge and skills to expertly deliver instruction and meet the unique needs of all learners.

  • Teaching our Teachers:
    • Implement an additional 12 power techniques from Teach Like a Champion 2.0: 62 Techniques that put Kids on a Path to College (24 total)
    • Expand professional development opportunities through online learning and book study groups
    • Support teachers to become Google certified
    • Strengthen trauma-sensitive practices throughout the district, guided by ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences)
    • Promote growth mindset
    • Refine the use of data to inform instruction and guide district practices
    • Focus on Universal Design for Learning for general and special education students
  • Promoting Leadership:
    • Transition to a new model of leadership for athletics

  • Family Engagement:
    • Promote early literacy and numeracy through parent outreach

    • Provide community outreach to promote city-wide understanding of the district’s mission and vision

    • Establish Special Programs family interest group to engage and support caregivers of students with disabilities

We believe in efficiency of resources

The district will maximize the efficiency of its resources to effectively and innovatively meet the goals and objectives of programs and services.

  • Operations:

    • Implement new traffic safety procedures by building

    • Refine use of Master Library (ML) Schedules online facility use request system

    • Strengthen district human resources processes and practices

    • Launch new, mobile responsive district website

    • Establish Board of Education policy committee

  • Programs:

    • Promote CDTA transportation option to students in grades 6-12

    • Review grading practices district-wide to ensure consistency, transparency and best practices

    • Continue to investigate efficient service delivery options for Special Programs

  • Facilities:

    • Upgrade facilities (LED Lighting) through New York Power Authority (NYPA)

    • Install new roof at Cohoes Middle School
