Cohoes City School District community mourns loss of central office secretary

July 17, 2015—The Cohoes City School District community is mourning the loss of a dedicated support staff member and friend. Secretary to the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent JoAnn Heroux, “Jo” passed away on Tuesday, July 14, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany.

“While I didn’t have the pleasure of knowing JoAnn personally, I know she touched many lives throughout the district and the community,” said Superintendent Jennifer Spring. “She was fully dedicated to her job—and all of our parents, students and colleagues here in Cohoes. She will be deeply missed.”

Known for her outgoing, friendly personality, JoAnn first joined the district as an aide at Page Avenue in 1999. She moved to building secretary at Abram Lansing the following spring.

“New teachers are always taught that the two most important people to get to know in the school are the secretary and the custodian, and in JoAnn’s case that was absolutely true,” explained Abram Lansing Principal Cliff Bird. “Somehow, she knew everyone – teachers, staff, principal, kids and parents – so well that she could anticipate everyone’s needs. She was empathetic towards everyone and treated us all equally.”

He added, “Her enthusiasm for life makes her loss so much more tragic. I can easily say she made us all better: better parents, better professionals, better people, and the world is a dimmer place without her joy, her spirit and her life.”

JoAnn was a longtime resident of Cohoes, and is survived by her husband, Bill and two daughters, Monique (Nathan) and Andrea, as well as many extended family members.

Services will be at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, 105 Vliet Boulevard, Cohoes, today from 4-7 p.m. A Mass for JoAnn will be held tomorrow morning (Saturday) at 9 at the Church of the Holy Trinity, with a burial in St. Agnes Cemetery in Cohoes following.
