Van Schaick students save "Paws" the mascot from the evil Purple Pirate PeteCollage of students doing puzzles

March 10, 2017—Second trimester referral-free students went on quite an adventure recently as they worked to save the beloved mascot “Paws” from the evil Purple Pirate Pete! The students embarked on an adventure to solve the clues left by Pete. Pete’s ransom video threatened to throw Paws, locked in a box, in the bottom of the ocean if the students couldn’t solve the puzzle in time!

Students were grouped into four teams to tackle the riddles before coming together as a class to solve the final clue, all within the 30-minute timeframe. Students not only solved riddles, but also completed crosswords puzzles, searched for hidden clues, scanned QR codes, completed jigsaw puzzles and solved math problems to help save Paws. Most classes were able to successfully help Paws escape and celebrate!

Earlier in the school year, Van Schaick faculty completed their own BREAKOUT EDU activity during a faculty meeting. The success of the immersive learning game has led to collaborative and exciting learning across the district. Van Schaick teachers chose the BREAKOUT EDU game as a reward for positive behaviors to celebrate successes while continuing to reinforce the district's commitment to promote curiosity, creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, communication, citizenship, and compassion for others.
