Changes to arrival procedures at Abram Lansing aim to ease congestion on James Street

April 24, 2017—Abram Lansing families who drive their children to school were welcomed back from April break with new arrival procedures. All students will now enter through the door by the playground for arrival. Families should drive through the lane and stop as close to the playground as possible. This serves to move traffic further along, allowing more cars to exit James Street and alleviating back-up that occurs in the morning.

“We passed the surprise pop-quiz this morning with flying colors,” wrote Abram Lansing Principal Cliff Bird in a letter that went home to families on Monday afternoon. “We have our version of Vanna White waving and smiling, and feel free to smile back!”

Families who need to park, whether to drop off projects or celebratory items for classroom parties, should park farther south, beyond the newly-painted bright yellow curb. Any adults entering school must still enter through the main door to check in.

Students who arrive after 9 a.m. must also enter through the main doors to check in with a late arrival slip.

Changes follow traffic study published in March

The change in arrival procedures comes after recommendations made in a comprehensive traffic study completed by Needham Risk Management, which analyzed the arrival and dismissal traffic at all five school buildings in the district.

“We’ve been working with the city to reduce the congestion created by the high volume of cars backed up on James Street between 8:30 and 9:15 a.m.,” said Superintendent Jennifer Spring, Ed.D. “This small shift in procedure will provide immediate relief to the problem.”

The district is continuing to review the study’s recommendations and make changes to improve the arrival and dismissal procedures where needed. Abram Lansing families can expect changes to dismissal in the future.

Changes are also likely at the middle school, high school and Harmony Hill Elementary beginning in September.
