Cohoes football program reintroduces varsity to play Class D teams

July 31, 2017—After a one-year hiatus, a varsity football team is back in Cohoes. New York State Section 2 Athletics has given the greenlight for the football program to play at the varsity level against Class D schools only, rather than the Class B teams faced in the past.

“Our decision to cut varsity last year was necessary due to student safety,” said Head Coach Rob Wattsman, who is in his first year leading Cohoes football. “Playing Class D schools will allow our kids to play at the varsity level and still be competitive, while keeping the safety of our players in mind.”

The fall roster is shaping up with at least 32 players, with 19 of them juniors and seniors. There are enough players to field the varsity and a modified team this year, but the future of the program is still uncertain.

“With low numbers last year, we knew this year would be an ongoing challenge,” said Coach Wattsman. “The players who are here now--who put in the hard work over the last few months--are learning that hard work pays off.”

He added that the the coaching staff and the players are excited for the chance to bring the varsity program back, but they know it’s just the first step in rebuilding a top-notch program.

The varsity football season begins with practice on Monday, August 14. Students who are interested can still join and should reach out to Coach Wattsman at robwattsman@gmail.com or 518-542-3929.
