Abram Lansing 4th graders participate in UAlbany SHAPE ProjectMs. Mentzer's class

Dec. 5, 2017—SHAPE stands for Student Health and Physical Environment. The study, administered by students at UAlbany and funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, tracked Ms. Mentzer and her class as they carried small air beams for 48 hours to record data on air quality.

Ms. Mentzer and her students also filled out symptom diaries to record how they we were feeling at the time (allergies, cold, congestion), and kept an activity diary to track where they were during different times of the day.

A large air quality machine was also set up in Ms. Mentzer’s room.

A random sample of 10 schools in Upstate New York were invited to participate in the study, which is measuring school environmental factors and their potential impact on students, teachers and support staff.

All of the students received a certificate for their participation and will participate in the study again in the spring.
