Cohoes Holiday Hope

Cohoes school district collaborates with city and other community partners to offer ‘Cohoes Holiday Hope’ for families in need

Program provides incentives to participate in school and community events

September 5, 2014--Each year, the Cohoes City School District’s Holiday Assistance Program has provided low-income families in the district with gifts and food to help create memorable holidays for children.

This year, the district, city and community organizations are excited to announce a new, expanded holiday assistance program–“Cohoes Holiday Hope.”

“Community organizations, city police and fire departments, the churches, and the schools, have always worked together to help our families with gifts, food and clothing during the holidays,” said Cohoes High School Social Worker Becky Leach. “Establishing Cohoes Holiday Hope will allow us to improve the way we adopt families, so we can help more people as a collective entity.”

Cohoes Holiday Hope offers families the opportunity to earn Holiday Bucks, which they can use at the Holiday Hope store to purchase gifts. The store offers a discount of 75 percent off the regular retail price.

Parents and guardians can earn Holiday Bucks by attending community events, workshops, and/or volunteering. Attending the Cohoes Fall Festival or Halloween parade, participating in Cohoes Bridges out of Poverty classes, and even attending their school open house or PTO meetings are just some of the ways parents can earn Holiday Bucks.

Families must first apply to be a part of the program. Cohoes families with children eligible for free or reduced lunch are automatically eligible for the program, as are families with an annual income of $50,000 or less. Once an application is reviewed and accepted, the family receives a passport to track the Holiday Bucks they earn.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to get started by filling out an application for the Holiday Bucks program at their child’s open house in September.

Shopping at the Cohoes Holiday Hope store, located at the Open Door Community Center, 115 Mohawk St., will begin on Dec. 1.

Applications can be found here, and at any of the participating agencies listed below.
