There were smiles all around on Tuesday, Sept. 3 as teachers, staff and administrators gathered at the high school for Opening Day.
After catching up with colleagues, Superintendent Peggy O’Shea welcomed the group into the auditorium.
She started off by relaying best wishes for a successful school year from Cohoes Board of Education President Board President Nadia Carey and Board Vice President Margaret Giller, who weren’t able to attend due to commitments at their respective school districts.
Ms. O’Shea thanked district custodians, cleaners, maintenance and groundskeepers for the tremendous work they did this summer amidst all of the capital project renovations .
“I saw firsthand how some of them would deep clean rooms only to have to clean the same rooms over again because of a change in construction schedule,” she said. “When you see them please let them know how very much you appreciate them.”
She also expressed her appreciation to over 20 new teachers and staff members who have joined our district this summer, as well as those who have moved positions internally. She reminded them that they are surrounded by an “amazing group of colleagues” who are always available for support and told them that she is only a phone call or email away should they have any questions.
The group was able to put faces to names as each building principal introduced their new hires, which is a tradition during opening day.
Ms. O’Shea also discussed the district’s Mission – “a partnership of schools, parents and the community, is to prepare its students for success in tomorrow’s world,” its Vision, “a purpose and plan for all,” and reminded everyone how important it is to not only prepare students academically for their future, but also socially, emotionally and physically.
“It’s our responsibility to provide students with experiences bigger than the world around them, to ensure all of our students are aware of the possibilities and have a solid foundation and plan for their next steps beyond us.”
She touched on the district’s four core beliefs – high expectations for all; positive school climate and culture; future ready knowledge and skills and the efficiency and equity of resources – noting that it will take a collaborative effort by everyone in all roles working together to ensure positive outcomes for all of our students.
Ms. O’Shea closed out her presentation by thanking the staff. “Thank you for all you have done to get ready for the school year. Thank you for your passion for learning, for improving the lives of students. Thank you for doing your very best. I wish you a fantastic start to your school year.”
Here’s to a successful 2024-25 school year!
