Students, faculty and staff at the Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical Education Center Albany Campus are taking part in the annual door decorating contest sponsored by the school’s SkillsUSA organization.
Students are combining a winter theme with their respective programs to develop their designs.
CHS junior Dayna Spizowski took part in the festive fun. She is enrolled in the Early Childhood Education program where she is preparing for a career that will someday see her decorating classrooms, bulletin boards and doorways with great frequency.
“My mom used to be a nurse and take care of little kids and that kind of influenced me into wanting to work with kids,” she said while taking a break from cutting the trim for the door.
The Early Child Education program is offered on the Albany Campus and in Schoharie Elementary School. Students in the program learn the basics of child development and build a solid foundation in classroom arrangement, management and curriculum development for infants/toddlers/preschoolers and young children. Students also learn how to communicate and work with parents and staff in an educational setting. An on-site childcare center provides hands-on work-based learning opportunities for students in the program.
Dayna said she enjoys the hands-on work the program offers.
“I like how you get real experience with lesson plans and actual teaching.”
The competition runs into early January.
