“Summer slide” is the tendency for students to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year. The effects of summer slide are cumulative, as researchers estimate that by the time a struggling reader reaches middle school, summer reading loss has accumulated to a two-year lag in reading achievement.
Thankfully, we have some great resources available to prevent a dip in reading levels over the summer months.
