Distinguishing Features of the Class:
This position has the responsibility for administering and participating in the operations and maintenance of computer networks. The work involves analyzing hardware and software network problems, researching new products and coordinating workshops. The incumbent may be assigned to work with Local Area Networks, District Area Networks, District Area Networks or Wide Area Networks. Work is performed under the general direction of the Appointing Authority or their designee with wide leeway allowed for planning and carrying out the details of the work. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate technical staff. Does related work as required.
Typical work activities: (Illustrative only)
- Delivers, installs and maintains Local Area Networks, District Area Networks and Wide Area Networks;
- lnstalls, configures and maintains network micro-computers, routers and file servers; Administers micro-computer networks and is part of the communications and connectivity team; Gathers network statistics, analyzes network traffic patterns and takes corrective action to resolve network problems involving computers and data communications hardware and software;
- Demonstrates and trains users in the operation and maintenance of computer hardware and software and computer networks; including lnternet access;
Researches, tests, evaluates and recommends data communications hardware and software; Consults with vendors, distributors, and user regarding the purchase of computer hardware, software and networks; assists in making budget recommendations - Plans, analyzes and writes proposals to help improve work flow including cost estimate for systems;
- Changes system software to meet program objectives;
- Analyzes computer processing requirements to plan a system that will provide capabilities required for projected workloads;
- Coordinates and conducts computer workshops for users to provide for up-to-date information and support;
- Plans and implements recommendations for system upgrades;
- Plans, coordinates, and implements security measures to safeguard information in computer network files against accidental or unauthorized modification, destruction or disclosure; network security data breach
- Assigns network computer access passwords to employees and students in Cohoes City School District
- lnstalls hardware and peripheral components, loads software packages, such as operating systems, word processing, or spreadsheet programs into computer;
- Provides support and assistance to individuals and groups using the network.

Full performance knowledge, skills, abilities, and personal characteristics:
Good knowledge of micro-computer and related product technology; good knowledge of logical operations of micro-computers and data communication devices; good knowledge of local and wide area network technology and administration including firewall administration, router and switch configurations, and telecommunication protocols and analysis; working knowledge of laws, rules and regulations and compliance pertaining to data security among others; working knowledge of data processing methodology and techniques including documentation of data security; ability to define and recommend micro-computer hardware and software; ability to detect and resolve micro-computer breakdowns and problems; ability to write proposals and cost estimates; ability to develop and conduct workshops related to micro-computer and network operation and maintenance; ability to configure work stations and local and wide area networks; computer literacy; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to train
others in micro-computer and network systems operations; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Minimum qualifications: Either
A. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered College or university with a bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer technology, data procession, management information systems, information resource management, or related field and three years of experience involving the installation of micro-computer hardware and software and configuration and administration of local and wide area networks; or
B. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered two year college with an associate degree in computer science, computer technology, data processing, management information systems, information resource management or related filed and five years of experience as defined in A) above ; or
C. Completion of an industry certified network training program and five years of the experience as defined in A) above; or
D. Seven years of full-time experience or its part-time equivalent as defined in A) above; or
E. Any equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of A), B), C) and D) above.
Special requirement: Possession of a valid New York State Driver’s License or otherwise demonstrated ability to meet transportation needs to perform field work responsibilities in the ordinary course of business; AND
lT professional certification requirements in at least one of the following:
- Cisco Certified – Network Associate (CCNA)
- Network (+)
- Certified lnformation – System Engineer (MCSE)
- Microsoft Certified System Engineer (MCSE)
- Knowledge of “Google School for Education” across Networks
Required lifting of light to medium weight packages; physical ability to install computer wiring.
