At the July 10 Board of Education meeting, Turner Construction and CSArch presented an update of the capital project’s progress. Groundbreaking on Alumni Field began back in April, and the work has been steady ever since.
If the ongoing construction work at Alumni Field is any indication, Phase 2 of the capital project is moving right along!
Cohoes High School
“We are excited with the progress of our new track and turf field this summer,” said Athletic Director Jeff Huneau. “Anticipation and excitement is building as we get closer to the opening of the facility.”
As of August 2024, completed work at the field includes demolition, drainage, installation of foundations for the track and field shot put pads and pole vault, and athletic light poles. View a bird’s eye view of the field construction from drone footage provided by CSArch.
Other completed projects at the high school this summer include roof replacement, asbestos abatement, ceiling work in the music room corridor, improvements to the auditorium (new stage curtains and stage refinishing), fire alarm upgrades, and power washing of the exterior columns.
Cohoes Middle School
This summer, the middle school has also undergone an exciting renovation that has transformed the three science classrooms. Each room now features modular furniture that can be easily rearranged, promoting student collaboration and adaptable learning environments.
“This flexible setup allows for seamless transitions between lectures, group work, and hands-on experiments,” said CHS Principal Kyle McFarland.
These new spaces will allow students to dive deeper into STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) subjects, fostering critical thinking and teamwork.
“We’re thrilled to provide our young scientists and science teachers with an environment that matches their potential and prepares them for the challenges of tomorrow.”
Other projects completed at the middle school include: window refurbishment and replacement, masonry work on the front facade, roof work, plaster repairs and painting, bathroom renovations (second floor) and water heater replacement.
Elementary Schools
Abram Lansing Elementary School
Abram Lansing is currently receiving a fresh coat of exterior paint. New tile flooring and paint refresh in the library have also been completed, along with window screen replacements and HVAC updates.
Abram Lansing Principal Cliff Bird compared the school’s new exterior paint to kids starting school with new clothes.
“We all like to start school with a new shirt or pants…some bright way to start the school year,” he said. “We can’t wait for everybody to see our brightened colors – it’s our school, just fresher and more vibrant!”
Harmony Hill Elementary School
At Harmony Hill, two unused locker rooms were converted into new small group instructional spaces and the elevator was refurbished.
“We are excited to have the ability to offer fresh new learning space
s to our faculty and students. The new elevator will allow us to safely get supplies and people to the second floor,” said Principal Mark Perry. “We would like to thank the Board of Education and our families for the support of this building project.”
Van Schaick Grade School
Principal Jacqueline DeChiaro is excited to welcome students with a new front entrance this year, which had brick repointing work done.
“You can never undo a first impression! So when our community comes to Van Schaick and sees the new entrance way, it will set the stage for a great new year,” she said.
Other completed projects at Van Schaick this summer include repairs to a wall in the cafeteria and gymnasium ceiling, painting, roof flashing repairs and new skylight domes.
We would like to thank our community for their ongoing support for these projects, and for our team members and partners for their role in completing these important projects!
