Cohoes high school students interested in a career in theater or movie productions will have an opportunity next month to not only put their futures in the fast lane to those exciting careers, but also tour the historic Proctors Theatre.
An open house for the Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical School Entertainment Technology program is scheduled for Feb. 4, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Proctors, which is located at 432 State St. in Schenectady.
The two-year program begins in the student’s junior year of high school; high school sophomores and their families are encouraged to attend this open house.
Students will meet with teacher Jeff Knorr and Proctors officials, as well as tour the stage and backstage of Proctors and learn all about the program that prepares students for careers in the arts.
CHS Junior Chloe Came loves the hands-on experience on and off stage with the professional stage crew.
In their studies, students learn about the many jobs and the skills needed to work in the entertainment industry, including set design/carpentry, lighting/stage electrics, sound design/recording, costuming, stage management, film/media, etc.
“It’s a fun program where we have the ability to meet new students from other schools with a very similar set of interests.”
In recent years, students helped theater crews prepare for a concert by the Albany Symphony Orchestra, worked on Classic Theatre Guild’s production of “T’was the Land of the Night Before …” at Proctors, and learned from the touring Broadway production crew of “Aladdin.”
“Students develop a wide range of skills on modern technologies right here at Proctors, which is why providing hands-on training with current shows in a professional theater is so important,” Proctors Collaborative CEO Philip Morris previously said.
Students can also earn up to a semester’s worth of college credits through the program.
