By week’s end, the base of the tree in front of Van Schaick Grade school will be a lot more colorful.
As part of an art project inspired by the book Only One You, every student in the school will place a painted rock by the tree’s trunk. The book, by Linda Kranz, centers around two rock fish parents teaching life lessons to their son.
“It celebrates what makes us all different and unique, but also how we come together as a whole,” art teacher Erin Abbott said.
Students were encouraged to create a design that represents what makes them unique.
“My rock was very colorful,” third grader Josephine Spinnato said. “It shows that I like the ocean. All the rocks together looks pretty and I like seeing other people’s creativity.”
The theme of individuality resonated with students.
“The rocks represented that you have to be you,” third grader Logan Lajuenesse said.
“After all, there’s only one you in the world,” Nyia Gicewicz added.
More than 100 rocks are expected to decorate the base of the tree.
